What’s happening to the FDR Park Meadows?

Clearcutting has begun in the southern woodlands

As of August 23rd, 2022, clearcutting has begun. There was one simple request of Parks and Rec: pause destruction of the Meadows until they had heard community concerns. They refused. Fairmount Park Conservancy has ignored the public’s calls and petitions to conserve precious wild spaces. The maps below show the proposed construction; all trees within the demarcated zone will be removed.

Although at least 55 acres have been clearcut, there are still 90-100 acres of habitat and tree canopy left to save from astroturfing and development. The meadows are magical; the development plan is controversial. Let Parks and Rec and your council people know that access to wild green space is important to South Philadelphians!
